ESL Campers Put Newfound ENGLISH Skills To The Test

The Advance ESL campers aboard Camp MMA honed their newly-polished English comprehensive skills to the true test early Tuesday morning, July 24 th, as the entire ESL crew stood by to witness. MMA President General Cheney and Superintendent Colonel Hill were on hand to take in the show.

Rocket kits, purchased at the local Hobby Lobby, arrived in several assorted pieces, complete with instructions…in ENGLISH. Reading and following illustrated diagrams…and under the supervision and direction of ESL Instructors David Allen, Diolanda Dye, Jose Michi, and Patricia Flores…the campers assembled the rockets and prepared the completed units for launch. According to ESL Instructor Diolanda Dye, very little direction from the instructors was needed as these campers have tackled their studies with a vengeance and “really know their ENGLISH!”

As the tropical sun reached midmorning level, the clear blue skies provided a perfect backdrop for tracing the rockets’ flight upward. A rotation of two ESL campers rigged the rockets, then drew back to an area of safety, attached to the launch base by a few connective wires. The “signal” camper prompted the audience to countdown loudly, “Five-four-three-two-one”, at which point the “launching” camper threw the ejection switch, sending the rocket far, far, far into the blue…followed by a swift descent to the dew-covered ground. As a final tribute, ESL Instructor David Allen ante’d up his home-grown project for launch, and to the delight of all - that rocket projected the highest!

Way to go, ESL…OORAH!
